One of the most iconic photographs of D. Bowie is the Watch That Man series, taken by Masayoshi Sukita in 1973. In these images, Bowie appears in a striking striped costume designed by Kansai Yamamoto for the Aladdin Sane tour; the outfit evokes the traditional aesthetic of the Hakama.
The photograph, which I was invited to reinterpret as a poster, was conceptually built upon three layers of meaning and printed using both stereotype and serigraphy techniques. The costume’s dynamic lines — radiating from the inside out — were placed onto the base of the paper using the stereotype method.
Inspired by Masayoshi’s photographic compositions, a new analog film output was created. Taken from a 35mm frame, Bowie’s red-toned negative figure was screen printed at the center of the composition.
Lyrics from the 1971 track Moonage Daydream were added to the top layer using screen printing, creating a deliberate sense of textual chaos and intensity.
The final work was printed in an edition of three on hahnemühle 100 hx70 w cm and is part of a private collection.
